Do essential amino acids stimulate muscle protein synthesis?

Leucine-rich EAA mixtures have been tested head-to-head against whey in acute muscle protein synthesis studies. Here is what those studies measured — and what they did not.

What was studied

Researchers at the University of Nottingham and the University of Birmingham measured muscle protein synthesis after leucine-rich essential amino acid formulations, and compared the response with whey protein and control conditions, in young and older adults.

What it showed

A complete EAA mixture with a high leucine dose stimulated muscle protein synthesis to a similar extent as whey protein in these acute settings — from a fraction of the calories and without digestion of an intact protein.

What this evidence does not show

These were acute, hours-long measurements of a synthetic response — not long-term trials of muscle gained. No study tested Muscle Water itself. A synthesis response is one input; total daily protein, resistance training, and time decide outcomes.
