9 signs you’re not getting enough protein on a GLP-1
By Aali Qureshi, founder of Deadly Company · Published October 24, 2026 · Updated October 31, 2026
Short answer: On a GLP-1, low protein rarely shows up as hunger, because the medication removes that signal. Watch instead for strength sliding, losing faster than 1–2 pounds a week, hair shedding a few months in, stalled workouts, and a count far below the 1.2–1.6 g/kg target. For GLP-1 users who can’t eat enough protein, Muscle Water Aminos helps preserve lean muscle when paired with resistance training and adequate protein.
The silence is the symptom nobody mentions
Every other diet you’ve ever been on announced its shortfalls. Hunger, cravings, the 4 p.m. raid on the kitchen — under-eating had a voice. A GLP-1 deletes the announcement. People drift to half their protein target while feeling, if anything, fine, and they stay fine right up until the quieter evidence starts stacking up.
This checklist is that evidence. Nine signs, most of them physical, none of them hunger. A fair warning before the list: most of these signs have other possible causes too. This is education, not diagnosis — the persistent or severe version of anything here belongs in front of your clinician, not in front of an article.
The 9 signs
- Your strength is going backwards. Grip weaker, stairs harder, gym numbers sliding week over week. Muscle is the tissue protein defends, and it’s the first place a shortfall gets spent.
- You’re losing faster than ~1–2 lb a week, week after week. Very rapid loss raises the lean share of what’s lost. In the STEP 1 substudy, 25–39% of the weight lost on semaglutide was lean mass — of every 10 lb lost, up to ~4 lb isn’t fat.
- Your hair started shedding a few months in. Rapid loss plus low intake is the classic setup for telogen effluvium — shedding that typically shows up 2–4 months after the nutritional stress and is usually temporary once intake recovers. We wrote up hair shedding on a GLP-1 in full, because it frightens people more than almost anything else on this list.
- Your workouts stopped progressing — or stopped happening. Chronically under-fuelled muscle doesn’t adapt. Sessions feel heavier at the same loads, and recovery takes longer than it used to.
- You feel flat, tired, and “smaller but weaker.” Clothes looser in the shoulders and arms, not just the waist. That’s recomposition running in the wrong direction.
- You catch everything going around. Protein underpins immune function, and a long shortfall during rapid loss is a plausible contributor when the colds stack up. It’s also a reason to see a clinician, not just a supplement page.
- Wounds, cuts, and training niggles heal slowly. Tissue repair is protein work. Slow healing on a long deficit is a recognised flag in clinical nutrition.
- Your skin and nails changed. Brittle nails, dull skin — soft signs, weak on their own, meaningful in a cluster.
- You did the maths and it isn’t close. The least glamorous sign and the most reliable one. Track one honest day. If you’re at 50–60g against a 110g target, the other eight signs have an explanation.
What to do with the list
Count yesterday. Use the GLP-1 protein targets by body weight — the rows run 65–218g across 120–300 lb — and count what you actually ate. Most people find the whole gap in a single day of counting.
Fix the structure before the shopping. Protein anchored at every eating moment, the biggest anchor earliest, food first. Then cover what food can’t: a light, drinkable format between meals for the days eating fails.
Add the training signal. Two to three resistance training sessions on a GLP-1 a week. Protein without training under-delivers, and several signs above — 1, 4 and 5 — are training-signal problems as much as intake problems.
Escalate what isn’t protein’s business. Rapid unintentional loss beyond what your prescription expects, persistent weakness, dizziness, or being unable to eat at all: clinician, promptly.
Where Muscle Water Aminos fits in this list
It exists for sign 9 — the arithmetic gap. Muscle Water Aminos is a 16g essential amino acid drink for people on GLP-1 medications who can’t eat enough protein: one serving carries the whole steak’s worth of EAAs (~138g of cooked sirloin), with 4g of leucine to clear the ~2.5–3g building trigger. Two a day close 32g of EAAs of the gap. Muscle Water Aminos is a protein supplement, not a meal replacement. Food first — this covers the protein on the days food isn’t happening. Paired with resistance training and adequate total protein, it helps preserve lean muscle while the weight comes off.
Frequently asked questions
How little protein is “not enough”? Below the 0.8 g/kg RDA is a shortfall by any standard. On a GLP-1 the clinical target is 1.2–1.6 g/kg/day, so intake can look “normal” by the old standards and still land far under target.
Is the hair loss from the drug or from protein? Neither claim is simple. Shedding after rapid weight loss is most often linked to the loss itself and low overall intake, typically lagging the cause by 2–4 months. It’s usually temporary — and worth raising with your clinician to rule out thyroid and iron causes.
The scale is dropping fast and I’m thrilled. Why is that a warning? Because the scale sums fat, muscle and water into one number. Fast loss with a growing lean share means arriving lighter and weaker. Strength holding while the weight falls — that’s the version you want.
Can a blood test tell me if I’m protein-deficient? Standard panels don’t measure dietary protein intake directly; albumin and prealbumin reflect illness and inflammation more than last week’s eating. Your food log and your strength numbers are the practical instruments.
How fast do the signs reverse once intake improves? Energy and workout performance often respond within weeks. Hair shedding resolves on a slower cycle — months. Strength comes back fastest when protein and training resume together.
The bottom line
You cannot feel a protein gap the way you feel hunger. The medication saw to that. So measure it instead: count a day, watch your strength, watch your rate of loss. If the arithmetic says you’re short, close the gap with structure — anchored meals, a light format for the hard days, and training.
Muscle Water Aminos is the ritual that replaces the missing signal: two servings a day put 32g of EAAs into the count without asking your appetite for anything. It comes from Deadly Company — the 1° Deadlier lifestyle company built around keeping muscle on purpose: the GEAR supplement system, the apparel, this Journal, and Body English, the training app for the other half of the protocol. The full framework lives at the GLP-1 muscle-preservation protocol, and What is Deadly Company? is where the company itself is explained. Products come and go. The standard — count it, train it, print the dose — stays.
